Ban live export Action Alert

Stop the Australian Government from breaking its own live export rules

The Australian government will be guilty of a betrayal of trust if it continues with plans to exempt Saudi Arabia from live export regulations.

Stop the Australian Government from breaking its own live export rules

We've seen animals in the live export trade being beaten, whipped, clubbed, stabbed in their eyes, and buried alive... Rules put in place in 2011 were meant to protect animals from the worst abuses of live export. Today, when these rules are broken, exporters can legally be held to account.

So when an entire country refuses to abide by the system, regulators should see an enormous red flag. Instead, it seems that the Australian Government may give Saudi Arabia a 'free pass' to circumvent 'ESCAS' (the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System) — with zero Australian oversight.

Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce claims that Saudi Arabia is a 'special case' because all livestock slaughter facilities are government-owned and that 'strict animal welfare laws' are enforced.

We've compiled a short video of what 'strict animal welfare laws' inside government-owned Saudi abattoirs actually looks like. And it's not pretty.

To open the floodgates to this unregulated market is to seal the fate of millions of terrified animals, and signal to the world that Australia will bargain with the welfare of animals.

Please URGENTLY message your federal MP and tell them that removing what little protection exists for exported animals would be a massive betrayal of trust. Ask them if they think this video (vimeo.com/105942876) represents an acceptable way to treat animals.
